What is a Health Coach?
Have you ever wanted to improve how you look and feel but just aren’t sure how to go about it?
Or maybe you dropped a few pounds for a special event, only to regain it once again? Even
though you want to make a change, the thought of finding the time or method seems
overwhelming.
Here’s where a health coach can step in. A health coach specializes in meeting you at the
intersection of nutritional knowledge and behavior change. They are not just a source of
information but a catalyst for transformation.
With a strong knowledge of various dietary theories and wellness practices, a health coach
understands how diet, nutrition & lifestyle, as a whole, contributes to health and wellness.
A health coach also has the tools and skills to help clients build new habits and make lasting
changes. They work with the client through motivation and implementation. But, just as
important, they help break through any barriers or blind spots the client may have. This is the
key to long-term success!
To use a sports analogy, consider the relationship between coach and athlete. The coach’s role
begins as teacher and trainer, but the player must be the one to perform in the game. The coach
is still supportive, but from the sidelines.
What a Health Coach Does
Health Coaches are “change agents” who help clients set and achieve health goals and build
new habits.
• Help discover the “why” behind their desired health change.
• Help identify challenges and root out blind spots preventing change.
• Empower clients to become experts on their health choices and mindsets.
• Provide support, motivation, and accountability when needed.
• Focus on long-term healthy habit formation and letting go of unhealthy ones.
Benefits of Health Coaching
Change is difficult, even when it’s something we really want. It’s easy to get discouraged and fall
back into old habits. But with a health coach at your side, any bumps in the road will be met and
worked through together.
New habits and mindsets take time to form. With a health coach in your corner, the chance for
success and a long-lasting outcome is much greater.
What a Health Coach Isn’t
While health coaches often work alongside medical professionals, they are not doctors or
physicians and will not diagnose, prescribe, treat, or interpret medical results.
Health coaches are not registered dieticians and will not write therapeutic meal plans or mental
health professionals providing therapy.
A health coach’s power is to stay in the coaching lane, providing information and accountability
so the client can truly become their own CEOs of health.
